The Incat Crowther-designed ‘Killimanjaro III’
Australian ship designer Incat Crowther has launched its 37m catamaran passenger ferryKilimanjaro III. This is the third ship in a series built by Richardson Devine Marine for Coastal Fast Ferries of Tanzania.
Following positive service experience with Kilimanjaro I and Kilimanjaro II, Incat Crowther and RDM were approached by the operator to develop a larger, faster and more versatile vessel. The result is a 558-passenger vessel, the largest on the Zanzibar – Dar Es Salaam route, and capable of running on the offshore route to the Island of Pemba.
Kilimanjaro III features Incat Crowther’s latest-generation hull form, designed for increased efficiency and improved seakeaping. Of all-aluminium contruction, the Australian-flagged ferry is powered by a pair of Cummins KTA50 engines, each producing 1,340kW. On sea trials, speeds were recorded of 31 knots-plus when loaded, and the normal operating speed of 29 knots is attained at 77% MCR.
A wider beam allows more passengers to be accommodated in a more versatile arrangement, offering the possibility of faster turn-round. Incat Crowther says that Kilimanjaro III’s cost per-passenger ratio is lower, so it offers increased revenue-making potential.
