Abstract:   With three serious conflicts in Gaza in the last six years resulting in over 3,700 Palestinian casualties, the future of peace and security in the region seems even more unpredictable than ever. Gaza has been referred to as an "open air prison" as it does not control its own borders, with the Israeli military controlling who and what is allowed in and out of the most densely populated area in the world. Israel maintains these measures are to curb terrorism and put an end to the security risk to Israeli citizens posed by rockets fired from Gaza. The intra-party dynamics of the Palestinian side, coupled with internal Israeli politics and international discord contribute to the on-going situation. The conflict seems intractable, and future clashes in the region likely.

In this presentation, Ms. Bolger will seek to examine the historical origins of the conflict, and analyse recent clashes against the backdrop of international law and a multitude of actors with diverging interests and spheres of influence. It also examines and assesses possible ways forward for the future."
