Abstract: In accordance with the study that was conducted in Zanzibar in 1982 as part of the community obstetric research initiative, a cross sectional survey of the rural and urban population based on questionnaires was conducted with the objective of identifying the type of taboos and rituals still in vogue relative to the puerperal period.

The results showed the presence of food taboos and prescribed ritualistic behavior amongst all post parturient Zanzibaris with differences on emphasis. They are mostly based on the belief that maintenance of the women health during the post partum period is dependent upon their observation of the taboos and rituals.

Dr. Hamed Mahfudh Mohamed, a renowned expert on reproductive health and obstetric research will give a presentation on this important study, its findings and recommendations.

Tea, Coffee and Snacks will be served freely.
