SOUTH-West based international development charity HIPZ (Health Improvement Project Zanzibar) has announced that three new Trustees have joined their Board. Ian Franklin, the UK Finance Director of global pharmaceutical company Pfizer, Michael Sugden, the CEO of creative agency VCCP Partnership, and Dr Nikki Biggs, Emergency Medicine Consultant have joined the existing six Trustees.
HIPZ works in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar and supports the management of two district hospitals, serving a population of 350,000 people. For the last three years, the charity has also run a community mental health programme based on the Zimbabwean Friendship Bench model, funded by Comic Relief.
The charity is in an exciting phase of growth and the new appointments will play a key role in helping to shape and support the strategy and operation of HIPZ, as it embarks on new programmes in 2021.
Speaking about the new appointments, Dr Ru MacDonagh, HIPZ’s Chairman and Founder said:
“I’m delighted to be welcoming Ian, Michael and Nikki to the HIPZ family.
“Ian’s wealth of experience in finance will be a huge asset to HIPZ. As we grow, we want to ensure that we are set up for the future, and his strategic and commercial expertise is a very welcome addition to the Board.
“Michael and VCCP have been involved in our work since HIPZ was founded, and I am delighted that he has agreed to join us in this more formal capacity. VCCP have always been a key supporter of our work, and Michael’s involvement at this stage in our evolution will help as we review our brand for our 2021 audience.
“Nikki has worked as a volunteer doctor for HIPZ in Zanzibar, so she understands the reality of our work on the ground. Her clinical expertise, passion for our work and commitment to global health and emergency medicine will all be greatly appreciated by the entire Board of Trustees.”

Ian is a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and has worked for over 30 years as a finance professional in the healthcare industry. Ian’s work has a broad international scope and, having also lived and worked overseas for 11 of those years, Ian is looking forward to bringing his experience to help the work of HIPZ.

Although I am a newcomer to the HIPZ ‘family’ my immediate impressions are of an organisation with a well-established modus operandi for delivering and supporting improved health solutions for the people of Zanzibar. I am looking forward to playing a part in this and bringing some of my experience to help further support the work of HIPZ.”

Michael is CEO of the VCCP Partnership. VCCP is a full-service creative, media and experience agency headquartered in London and employing 1,000 people in 8 locations around the world. Some of VCCP’s key clients include O2, comparethemarket.com, Cadbury, Macmillan, Amnesty International, EasyJet, Nationwide and Google.
Michael said:
“I, and VCCP, have been lucky enough to be a very small part of the HIPZ story since Ru founded it in 2007. I have always been impressed by how HIPZ can make so little go so far. HIPZ is efficient, agile and focused only on the impact they can deliver. They are everything a contemporary charity should be. It was a very easy decision when Ru asked me to become a Trustee and I can’t wait to help HIPZ deliver even more in the future.”
Nikki Biggs
Nikki is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine with sub-speciality training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine. She trained in Southampton and spent several years working in New Zealand before completing specialist training across London. She spent nearly a year working as a volunteer with HIPZ between 2017-8 having undertaken the DTM&H in Liverpool. She is a member of the RCEM Global Emergency Medicine Committee and has a specific interest in paediatric burns injuries in LMIC settings. She is a passionate educator and an advocate for wellbeing, staff support and human factors in medical leadership.
Nikki said:
“Coming on board as a Trustee for HIPZ is such a privilege. The ethos of the organisation; of honesty, transparency and a true commitment to collaborative working to facilitate sustainable change is apparent at every turn. I hope to be able to bring my expertise in Emergency Medicine and my experience of working on the island, to help continue the incredible work already being done.”
