I am the Director of Festival Operations at Women's Voices Now (WVN), a new not-for-profit social enterprise based in New York City. Our Mission is to empower women and give voice to the struggle for civil, economic, and political rights. We create platforms from which women may speak directly to each other and to an international audience.
We would like to introduce your students to, and invite them to participate in, our first project, Women's Voices from the Muslim World: A Short-Film Festival. The Festival focuses on women of all faiths and backgrounds living in Muslim-majority countries and Muslim women living as minorities around the world. The Festival is the only one of its kind and it is intended to elevate the dialogue on women`s rights in the Muslim world (as broadly defined above) by adding nuance and a multiplicity of voices to the media, news and art currently available to international audiences.
We have received films from 27 countries on 4 continents. We are very excited about the diversity of both filmmaker nationalities and subject matter that has been submitted. The first ten films accepted to the Festival are viewable on-line at www.womensvoicesnow.org/watch. We will be putting up the next ten films next Monday and then each Monday after that.
We are accepting film submissions until November 24, 2010 in four categories: Documentary, Fiction, Experimental and Student. We would be incredibly grateful if you could circulate the attached Call for Submissions to your students, professors and alumni. A total of US$35,000 will be awarded in cash prizes to the winners of each category, to the winners of an Audience Choice category (resulting from an on-line contest), and to eight honorable mentions exploring the lives of girls or the mother/child relationship.
The Festival will reach audiences in three principal ways: (i) On-line viewing of the films at www.womensvoicesnow.org. The medium of film, specifically short-film available on the Internet, allows for the broadest possible reach into every corner of the world. (ii) A Festival Event with screenings of top films and panels of speakers adding context to those films at the Los Angeles Film School in California March 10-12, 2011. (iii) Screenings in as many places around the world to reach an even more diverse audience.
To assist our dissemination efforts, WVN has partnered with numerous organizations including Women In Film International, American Society for Muslim Advancement (New York), the Levantine Cultural Center (Los Angeles), Global Grassroots (New Jersey), Aquila Magazine (Indonesia), Sayidati Magazine (Dubai), Young Arab Women Entrepreneurs (Beirut), American Islamic Congress (Washington, DC), the University of Michigan-Dearborn (USA), and Amnesty International Toronto Film Festival (Canada). We would be incredibly grateful for any assistance you could provide in the dissemination of our Call for Submissions and promotion of the Festival to your networks.
I have attached our Call for Submissions, most recent Press Release, and One Pager to give you a better understanding of our methods and goals. Further details can also be found on our website, WomensVoicesNow.org.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, ideas or inquiries about further collaboration.
Warm Regards,
