Poverty facing many households in Zanzibar continues to fuel bad forms of child labour, the European Union (EU) ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Tim Clark, said on Friday at the official launch of two child protection projects.
“It’s only through alleviating poverty that child labour will become history,” he said at the event graced by Zanzibar Second Vice President Seif Ali Iddi who admitted that major economic activities such as fishing and tending to clove plantations were among areas where child labour was intensive.
“Studies also show that the hospitality sector, quarrying, transport and construction are other child labour intensive sectors; sometimes child prostitution has been reported,” he said.He also deplored the growing violence against children, saying it was one of major obstacles to development in Zanzibar.
“The government of Zanzibar recognises the seriousness children’s rights abuse and its impact on the general welfare of children, and therefore the government has thus committed itself to taking measures aimed at eliminating all forms of abuse and violence against children and ensuring that children enjoy all their rights,” the Vice President said.
