The disabled community in Shaurimoyo
constituency had been left behind for many years without the right facilities
in the area to accommodate their needs.
Best of Zanzibar the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative by Pennyroyal Ltd was approached by Hon. Hamza Juma in early 2017, requesting for the construction of the Disabled Center in the constituency.
Pennyroyal’s CEO Mr. Brian Thomson at once visited the proposed location and approved of the construction of the center.
Best of Zanzibar has fully sponsored the construction of the Tsh 26,000,000/- disabled center as well as providing 4-wheelchairs, computers and furnitures for the center to be fully operational. The center is a day program that provides a creative learning environment for more than 30 adults and young adults with developmental and physical disabilities.
Vice President of Tanzania Hon. Samia
Suluhu Hassan was the guest of honor at the ceremony where she laid the
foundation stone and commended Best of Zanzibar for their work on the center
and urged the community members to take care of the premises as well as support
the disabled community in the area.
“I would like to urge mothers with
disabled children not to hide their children but to bring the children to the
center so that they can learn skills and improve their livelihoods through the
different vocational programs that will be taught at the
center.” Said Hon. Samia Suluhu.
She added, “having a disability does
not mean that the individual is unable to work or learn skills, however they
need facilities that will help them gain knowledge as I have seen many great
works of art and clothing done by people with disabilities.”
“In its endeavor to make Zanzibar a
better place, Pennyroyal Limited through its Corporate Social Responsibility
(CSR) initiative Best of Zanzibar is proud to be a part of empowering people
with disabilities and helping them gain economic independence through the
different activities done at the center.” said Best of Zanzibar Program Manager
Aminata Keita.
The center is expected to be officially open by the end of April 2018.
