THE newly appointed Vice Chancellor (VC) of the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), Prof Idrisa Rai, said on Thursday he aims at making the university to be a world-class centre for excellence.
Prof Rai said, however, SUZA is still in its infancy and needs to expands, but it has to percolate other priorities for the development of the University.
"I believe I can accomplish my short term vision to make SUZA the most preferred university in the region", said Prof Rai, the youngest professor of IT in the region in his mid-40s.
He cited relevance and quality as his priorities in the managing the university.
According to him, the university must offer relevant education to fit well in the demanding job market.
"The university must produce internationally-acceptable graduates with noticeable quality of education acquired from SUZA", said Prof Rai during an interview with the 'Daily News' here.
Prof Rai widely published professional articles in the field of IT that earned him several international academic awards.
Growth and expansion in terms of capacity building, particularly developing quality teaching and research staff will also be among Prof Rai’s priorities.
He also said he would devote his time to develop the necessary infrastructure for the university, developing more relevant programmes, leveraging on the use of technology for teaching and learning.
Prof Rai appeals for Zanzibaris living in diaspora to come back home and join hands for the welfare of Zanzibar.
He said “brain gain vs brain drain” is an appealing term to use - so the use of disapora will help a bit to jerk up performace in the development of Zanzibar.
Prof Rai is currently an Associate Professor in Communications Networks, awarded with highest honour in 2004 at ENST-Telecom Paris Tech.
He joined Makerere University in 2007. One of his academic milestone was IBM Faculty Awards derived from his work and contributions in research and teaching which was recognised by various international prestigious organisations, such as Marquis Who is Who, IBCs world 100 educators list, Internet Society (ISOC) FELLOWSHIPS

Asante Profesa,tunahitaji watu wenye mitazamo kama ya kwako."the university must offer relevant education to fit well in the demanding job market" Sote hatiwezi kusoma ualimu hapa, wakati mahitaji yetu ni madaktari,ma injinia,watu wa IT tena kila wizara na Idara, wanasheria tena(sio wale wa mwisho chumbe!)etc. Sielewi hawa wakuu wetu walirogwa na huu ualimu au kwa vile viongozi wetu wa kisiasa wengi walikua walimu? Cha kusikitisha zaidi, hata wanafunzi hawaelekezwi kuchagua masomo yanayoendana na wakati wanachagua;Kiarabu,dini,Kiswahili.Form 6 kibao ndio comb.zao hizo.Nb; si dharau dini ieleweke vizuri lkn kwa hapa petu dini unaweza hata ukachukua PhD Mskitini na kwenye madarsa mfano Bin thumeit, A.s. al-farsy etc. Na hicho kiarabu hakuna anaekwenda kufanya kazi uarabu hapa! hata watalii wa kiarabu hawaji..hawa jamaa funny kweli! hata kuja kuzuru yale magofu yao? wanashindwa na wazungu?
