Abstract: Fighting violence against women and children is one of the most important core
responsibilities of the Zanzibar Government. The Ministry of Labor, Youth, Women and Children Development is playing an increasingly pivotal role in the implementation of this noble objective. The Government’s decision to contract the Zanzibar Institute for Research and Public Policy to conduct this research came at a an appropriate time when the acts of violence against women and children in Zanzibar are increasing by the numbers and at an alarming proportion. In accordance with the Terms of Reference for this study, ZIRPP is called upon to assess the scope and magnitude of violence perpetrated against women and children in Zanzibar by making scientific judgment on the problem as well as coming up with some concrete recommendations on the best ways and means of dealing with this scourge. The task was enormous, huge and increasingly challenging. Ms. Najma Murtaza Giga, one of the three researchers who conducted the study, has agreed to share her experiences on the subject, the findings and concrete recommendations.
Tea, Coffee and Snacks will also be served freely.
