Speaker: Mr. Msellem Khamis Msellem
Subject: "The Role and Position of Zanzibar in the Ongoing Process of East African Integration"
Abstract: The East African Community has passed through many stages in the ongoing process of its imminent integration. While the five member states, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi fully and actively participate in various meetings and deliberations associated with the Community's development, Zanzibar seems to be no more than just a none entity. In other words, Zanzibar's role and position in the EAC's ongoing process of integration is yet to be defined and clearly understood.
Mr. Msellem, an Economic Advisor to Zanzibar's First Vice President, who has, since 1999, participated in various meetings and negotiations pertaining to the East African Community's development, will provide his insights and focus on the historical background of the defunct East African Community (1967 – 1977), highlighting its main objectives, membership and reasons for its collapse.
He will also make some pointed remarks on Zanzibar's role, position and status in the defunct Community. He will also share his views on the common question: "Can Zanzibar make its voice heard in the Community as a non-member state?
The speaker will conclude his presentation by advising the Zanzibar government to revisit the past and plan for its future role in the Community's ongoing integration process.
