Abstract: The Union between Zanzibar and Tanganyika was consummated on 26 April 1964 after the Presidents of Zanzibar, Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume and that of Tanganyika, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere signed the infamous Articles of the Union of 1964. 51 turbulent years have elapsed and the Union has never ceased to be a great bone of contention between the two contracting parties.
In other words, some political pundits have termed the Union as a very progressive attempt towards the effective implementation of the ideals of Pan-Africanism, while others have seen it as nothing more than outright annexation of Zanzibar by Tanganyika. Over the years, there are, of course, some important benefits that have been realised and accrued by both parts of the Union as a result of the merger; but there are also too many grievances, especially from Zanzibar, that are associated with it since its controversial establishment in 1964.
As President of Zanzibar Law Society and former member of the Constitutional Review Commission, Mr. Awadh Ali Said will attempt to take a thorough review of the Union, its advantages, disadvantages and prospects. He will also try to provide his insights on some of the most controversial issues surrounding the Articles of the Union, its ratification process as well as sharing his thoughts and perspectives on the way forward towards a better and more robust Union.
Tea, Coffee and Snacks will be served freely.
