SUZA and ZUMC forge academic partnership

The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) and Zhejiang University of Media and Communication (ZUMC) signed a five year extendable Memorandum of Understanding  (MoU) on promotion of cooperation and the advancement of academic, research and educational disciplines. This agreement was reached on Friday 24th November, 2017 at Tunguu Main Campus of the State University of Zanzibar.

In this occasion, Prof. Zhaowu Tang, the ZUMC Vice Chairman who led a mission of four members signed on behalf of his institution in the presence of Dr. Haji Mwevura, the Acting Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics, Research and Consultancy.
  
The areas of cooperation to be covered in this cooperation are staff and student exchange, joint research activities and publications, visits for studying teaching principles and methods, development of cooperation projects and of joint degrees, also participation in seminars, congresses and meetings.

Under this cooperation the State University of Zanzibar will be responsible for initiating staff exchange programmes, facilitating the provision of Kiswahili language experts to Zhejiang University of Media and Communication in addition to facilitating and cooperating with academicians of ZUMC in conducting research in Zanzibar in related field areas of cooperation.
The responsibilities of Zhejiang University of Media and Communication in this cooperation will be to support media and communication programmes for SUZA staff and students by granting them scholarships to study in China. ZUMC will also provide opportunities for SUZA staff in developing their knowledge, skill and attitude in order to engage with and contribute effectively to tackling global challenges. The University will provide professional teachers in relevant specialties and advance the labs for media and communication researches and it will facilitate exchange students programme.

The State University of Zanzibar envisages introducing the School of Computing, Communication and Media in the near future and through this School media studies will be taught. Currently SUZA owns the Centre for Digital Learning (CDL) which runs digital television studio for educational purposes.  ZUMC delegation paid a brief visit to this studio.


Earlier before signing the MoU, Prof. Zhaowu Tang informed that ZUMC is ready to influence its expertise to SUZA as it has extensive experience in operating media industry saying that they are sincerely ready to work with SUZA.

Dr. Mwevura said that ZUMC has many Zanzibari students pursuing their undergraduate media studies, he appealed to Prof. Tang to think of granting Masters Degree scholarships to some of them who come out with very good performance so as to serve at the State University of Zanzibar on completion of their studies.

During their one day visit in Zanzibar the delegation was expected to meet with Hon. Riziki Pembe Juma, the Minister of Education and Vocational Training at the Ministry quarters.


Zhejiang University of Media and Communication (ZUMC) is one of China’s major hubs that cultivate specialized talents for the broadcast industry and other industries in media and communications. For more than thirty years, ZUMC has provided central and local broadcast and media industries with a myriad of specialized talents. Almost 14,000 full-time students are currently studying in over fifty programmes at the thirteen Colleges and Schools of ZUMC.
