Turkish mission led by His Excellency Mr. Ali Davutoğlu, the Turkey Ambassador to Tanzania
paid a visit to the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) on 30th October, 2018.
The delegation was welcomed at Vuga Campus by Prof. Idris Rai, the Vice Chancellor who
was accompanied by Dr. Ali Makame Ussi his Deputy on Academics, Research and
Consultancy and Dr. Haroun Ayoub Maalim, the Deputy Vice Chancellor on Administration,
Planning and Finance; also attended was Dr. Salum Seif Salum, the Dean, School of Health and
Medical Sciences and two officials from the Ministry of Health.
Among other issues which have been discussed, the discussion mainly based on the
establishment of the new faculty which will deal with dental health educational base, it was
however stated that Turkey government respects all kinds of faculties including the one which
has been focused.
It was reported that the demand of having our school specifically for teaching dentists is very
high; this is due to the fact that so far there is an acute shortage of specialists in this discipline
while at the same time the rate of dental caries is tremendously increasing among many
children hence founding of this faculty could greatly help minimizing this problem.
His Excellency Ambassador Ali Davutoğlu dedicated to work on the idea and that through the
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) he will be supportive in ensuring that
the project is materialized.
Meanwhile Prof. Idris Rai talked on the proposal of offering scholarships to SUZA staff by
Turkey government and cooperation in doing research and publications in diverse fields; he
then appreciated the good intention of the visitors.
