Abstract: Europe and Africa have been in constant contact since time immemorial, through the ancient world to the present. The Euro-African or Afro-European relationship has not always been a happy one, especially in its modern version. Deeply rooted in the troubled historical legacies of the slave trade, territorial conquest and partition, and the colonial and neocolonial experience, Europe-Africa relations, about half a century after decolonisation, is undergoing radical transformation from one characterised by dominance and dependence to one aimed at strategic partnership and cooperation.

The lecture would highlight the salient features of the historical evolution of the Euro-African relationship, interrogate the EU’s push for the replication of its model of regional integration in Africa and the AU adoption of the EU model underpinning the of the Joint Africa-EU Strategic Partnership (JAESP), and assess the feasibility of such duplication.Tea, Coffee and Snacks will be served freely.
