ZANZIBAR TOURISM SECTOR DECLINES

The number of tourists dropped from 134,954 in 20009 to 132,836 last year, it has been leant. T his has led to the decrease in economic development rate of hotels and local restaurants from five percent last year.


According to the Zanzibar's Minister of State and Development Programs, Omar Yusuph Mzee, the situation has paralyzed hotel tourism in the isle.
“To overcome the situation our government will increase its efforts in advertising our tourism attractions to attract tourist so as to develop important sectors including agriculture and industrial sectors,” he said. He said together with advertising tourism efforts, the government will also encourage youths to engage themselves in modern agricultural activities as some way of increasing the economy. “
On the Union irritants, the ministers said the Zanzibar government made series of meeting with the Union government. “ Since the initiative to address the Union irritants began in the year 2006, a total of six meetings have been done by the Prime Minister , and Vice President , whereas about seven issues have been solved although there are still more discussions going on the remaining problems are done ,” he said.
He said on the issue of united Financial Commission, Zanzibar government would continue with its efforts in collaboration with United Republic of Tanzania government to convey recommendations on their reports provided in both governments.
